Madrid, SpainDCD>Debate: European Energy Efficiency Directive: too big an obstacle or a magnet for data center investments?
Date: May 22, 2024, 11:00 a.m. — 12:00 p.m. CEST
Speaker: Dr. Tomas Rahkonen, Research Director of Distributed Data Centers, Uptime Institute
The Data Center sector in the European Union is expected to experience a 28% increase in energy demand by 2030, compared to 2018 data. In an effort to address the growth in electricity demand and reduce carbon emissions on the continent, the European Union adopted the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) as part of the European Digital Strategy.
In this scenario, the Energy Efficiency Directive seeks to establish specific measures to address these challenges. Transparency in the environmental footprint, energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy sources and the reuse of waste heat become key elements for the sustainability of Data Centers in the European Union.
Therefore, in this debate we will discuss how these regulations are impacting Data Centres, whether they are prepared to face their requirements, whether the EED will be a support or an obstacle for the arrival of new investments in Europe, whether more regulations are synonymous with more or less investments or whether they provide security.
DCD>Debate: Expectations VS Reality: Are we stuck in the advancement of Edge Data Centers in southern Europe?
Date: May 22, 2024, 11:00 a.m. — 12:00 p.m. CEST
Speaker: Rafael Serrano, Business Development, Spain and Portugal, Uptime Institute
We have been talking about the evolution and implementation of Edge for a decade, however, the positive forecasts collide with a reality that shows the advancement of this technology much slower than expected in southern Europe. In recent years, Edge has not necessarily lived up to industry expectations, as use cases are constantly evolving and demands are constantly changing.
At this point, some of the main concerns raised are: why the edge is not meeting industry expectations, whether it has delivered the benefits it promised, what is the trajectory of edge data center development in southern Europe and whether the edge will die.
DCD>Debate: Is a Cloud-Only model feasible or is a return to on-premise the ideal option?
Date: May 22, 2024, 12:00 p.m. — 1:00 p.m. CEST
Speaker: Rachid Arabi, Vice President – Europe & UK, Uptime Institute
Cloud adoption has become essential for companies globally. 98% of organizations are currently in the process of migrating to the Cloud, even though they still retain 75% of their workloads on-premises, as reflected in NetApp's Data Complexity Report 2023.
Companies are realizing that a hybrid combination of Cloud and On-premise could be a more convenient strategy. The clear benefits of a hybrid environment lie in the ability to take the best that each environment, cloud or on-premise, has to offer. For many, going to the Cloud meant being able to dispense with the capital expense of data centers, closing and selling off expensive legacy infrastructures. But recent moves suggest that organizations may be retreating from the Cloud and ‘repatriating’ data, workloads and applications to On-premise or Colocation facilities.
What types of workloads are best suited to stay in the Cloud and which are best to stay on-premise? What are the benefits and challenges of adopting a hybrid strategy, combining Cloud and On-premise compared to a Cloud-only approach? And what do companies need to know for a repatriation project?

Orlando, FL, USWednesday Keynote: Prioritizing Highly Evolved Infrastructure and Fully Optimized Operations, Are You Ready?
Date: June 12, 2024, 8:45 a.m. — 9:45 a.m. EDT
Speaker: Ron Davis, Vice President, Digital Infrastructure Operations, Uptime Institute
State-of-the-art infrastructure design and construction must be seamlessly integrated with operational excellence to support reliable, secure, and effective data center operations. A well-located, purpose-built facility, designed and built to include reliable, efficient, and high-performance infrastructure, provides the foundation for a fully functional data center, while a top-tier data center operations program facilitates its optimal utilization. This holistic approach maximizes the potential of advanced equipment and technologies but also mitigates risks, minimizes downtime, manages change, and enhances overall resilience. The synergy that occurs when you prioritize highly evolved infrastructure and fully optimized operations is a critical factor in supporting a growing, yet increasingly competitive industry.
